Traveling Australia at the moment with my family, was stopped by a fellow bushtracker owner and asked what my build number was. He then told me it's the last numbers on the vin plate. Can anyone confirm this for me. Vin 6R9T20000T2F79001
Thanks Sam

Sorry NO... nonsense... Yours would neither be the first, nor the 9001st but something in between... Laughing Laughing

Those Vin Numbers are randomly allocated, not in sequence. Even these days they are issued in blocks of like 20 with no sequence in relation to build numbers....

We have been going for 22 years. You did not indicate what year your Bushtracker was. You need to do that with any technical questions so we can better help you.

One more thing: WELCOME TO THE FORUM, POST NUMBER 1 !!!

Kind regards, Steven Gibbs, Director

That was my thinking, built 9th month 1996. It has a flat front not the usual tyre recess the bed is in the back and entry door is at the front.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Be interesting and possibly educational for many to find out, and see photos of the oldest BT still operational, on the road. Surely those records exist. Would need some phone calls to clear privacy issues though. Who knows how many times it has been on sold, maybe current owners are unaware of history.

In our previous "life" of camping with a Ultimate Offroad Camper trailer, the first question owners would ask each other when they met for the first time is: "What number are you??"

Every Ultimate was given a build number....mine was 56.

It's a shame that type of "system" was not instigated in the beginning with BTi.

Never mind.....too late now.

Bill I got the impression, perhaps incorrectly, from Steve that there is no sequential serial numbers for vans as constructed, just random Vin numbers generated and passed on from QDOT to go on vin plates, which are then married forever more to Registration numbers.

Maybe back in their olden days BT office recording and paper trails were not as important as modern times.

No doubt Steve will comment in due course and enlighten us all.

Yes, I just meant that if they'd have numbered each caravan as they rolled off the factory floor....starting at "1", then "2" etc, it would have provided a similar talking point amongst owners.

Nothing to do with VIN numbers or Rego numbers or anything else....just the chronological time when the rubber hit the road for the first time.

No big deal....just would've been nice.

It would also have simplified things when it came to asking for advice of the factory. For example: somebody who wanted to know if XYZ type fridge would be a suitable replacement for their existing fridge could simply ask: Our van is number 1,324 and I'm wondering if a Dometic 190 litre will fit to replace our original 3 way fridge. The factory people would EASILY have been able to go to the blueprints for that EXACT van and see what the cabinet dimensions are and respond with EXACT information (provided no home made alterations had been done in the meantime.

Yes Rosiebear,
You are close to correct...

They used to just give us random VIN allocations when we applied for a new batch. There was nothing sequential...

Just how it is, in the infinite wisdom of Qld Transport....
