Yes, Tea Tree oil is quite good for removing adhesive gums.
Give Eucalyptus oil a try also, as it is just as good. Just finished using some this morning for a similar reason.

They are steel, don't think alloy could be torqued up too well without stripping. Did find BSA were really helpful, had to send a few emails from memory.
