[Bushtracker]

This is one that many Owners share. Digital cameras have made computers excellent lit up photo albums of the adventures. Many of you communicate to me with digital pictures of various things on your Bushtracker, accidents, hail damage, ideas, inventions; but just one important issue please take note of:

The best size to email is about 100-150 kb. You do not need to jamb up the systems with hi-resolution 1 Meg pictures like I get mailed now and then... That would be the right size for blow up poster sized high definition pictures, but not to clog up our internet with long downloads... ...

Please reduce any pictures to that 100-150 kb size. Save the larger size of course, but for email it takes waaaaay to loong and toooooo expensive to email when someone may be downloading on a wireless plan like Bigpond!!! When I get a big log jamb up like that, I have to go to an account on the Server and block it so it does not jamb up my system, OK?

If for instance we were to send it to a magazine, they want that larger format for printing a high resolution picture.. Most of the pictures you Owners send to me for comments or fixes or accident damage, need to be reduced to under 100 kb PLEASE.... Anyway, a picture to a friend even, does not need to be sent in large format of 1 Meg (10 times the size of 100 kb) unless they are going to have it professionally printed off to hang on the wall in A-3 or A-4 picture frame size OK? Pictures to Bushtracker need to be sent waaaaaaaaay smaller so as not to clog up the systems, or I will have to delete them at the Servers end and not even be able to download them when I am away on wireless. If I need a high resolution version, I will ask for it... But say 150 kb is big enough to blow up in computer screen to very large detail. A lot of pictures loaded on here are well under 50 kb... Thank you...

One more thing, please send them in Jpeg format, Thank you...

Photography................my favourite pastime.
For those of you thinking of bypassing Rocky, here I hope is a reason for you to stay a night or two.
Lake Mary is a great place for early morning and late afternoon pics especially in the winter months when the light is crisp and clear.

Approx 34 km north of either Fitzroy River bridge on picturesque Hedlow Creek.

23 06 51S, 150 35 05E These co-ordinates will get you there. You can camp at several places along the creek, but there are no facilities. Included are a few appetisers.

Is it "as seen" or is there layers [highlights , shadows, for that dynamic depth that digital is still lacking plus contract etc] using Photoshop?
I miss E6 reversal film [slide] on medium format for these shots.
My passion is Art photography, but wedding photography pays, but after 22 years I am 'over it'.

Call me old fashion, but I have photo,s in a box of my life as being a keen unpro shooter of which we go through occasionally most done on 35mm and processed the old way. I visited an old friend the other day that did a world trip and not one photo to look at because they were on a computer disc. My view is that if digital photo,s On a Digital Disc goes like on most DVD's I hire I bet your photo's will never be seen when you get old.Now owning a digital camera I find none ever reach paper and still use my old RICOH 35zf for some memory photo's. Digital great for short term and to use to forward on computer of course.But in 60yrs time due to this new eara the old style photo's will be rare in my view.So still take the odd old fashion photo that you are forced to develop for your own quick memory in the future. Al (only my view)

Alan, it's actually pretty straight forward to display photos these days.

I use my video camera to take still photos. They are widescreen (16X9). I have a small, 26", LCD tellie in our family room. It has HDMI input. The camera has HDMI output. I plug it in, select "slideshow" and sit back and watch all the photos in full HD, widescreen.

Hi Chris ....great photos, I like the way you have created drama in the landscape and the capture of light is great. Often an untamed landscape is moving to look at but hard to capture oon film. Well Done !!

Digital photos stored on a DVD will last a VERY long time, certainly longer than the 35 years I have been storing negatives and film slides. But also you might want to consider that it is MUCH cheaper. For starters you don't have to print anything you don't want .... just delete it. But if you want prints ..... you can get them for about 15cents each in bigger towns and OfficeWorks is only 12Cents down here on the NSW South Coast at Nowra.

Our photos are scrapbooked, so we do print many of them. I am not sure that I am confident of the 35year plus storage guarantee for digital, my other concern is changing storage formats (anyone got a floppy disc reader anymore?). Also believe that photo processing for film will diminish quickly so have scanned many of my slides and negs onto digital. Lots of younger friends run their photos as their screen saver.

Yeh Bindi, a small amount of Photoshop, but as with most things less is best.

As for wedding photography.....very demanding and a long long day. No more for me.

Negatives, I have stored in archival sheets, and as for the 100's of 1000's of digital files, they are backed up on a series of DVD's and DL DVD's and at last count, seven external drives. About 6TB. The next best thing for storage is the Solid State Drive, current capacity is only 512 GB, for $1000, but getting bigger all the time.

I think the DVD will be around for a bit longer yet.

Another great place....Bajool Salt Works.

36.6 kms south of Rocky turn left on the Port Alma Rd. Another 10 kms and you will be right outside Cheetham Salt Works. You can probably drive another 10 k's along this road and gain a different perspective.

Early morning and late afternoon are the best and most dramatic times especially when there is a storm approaching from the south. This is truely an amazing place when the light is right.

It's not far off the road if you are traveling through either.

We just bought a new compact camera with GPS and 12times zoom with wide angle lens.

The location information is stored in the photofile. Programs, such as Photoshop Elements place the photo on a map. Great fun and very handy.

Now we are stuck at home for another couple of weeks then we will be on the road again to try this little beauty out.

Hi Bushtrackers interested in digital negative file life on DVD.

My background is the IT industry so I did some reasearch and came up with the following for you.

"Among the manufacturers that have done testing, there is consensus that, under recommended storage conditions, CD-R, DVD-R, and DVD+R discs should have a life expectancy of 100 to 200 years or more; CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM discs should have a life expectancy of 25 years or more."

In reality you will move the digital file to something other than DVD long before 100 years is up; because the format will be obsolete. Also important will be the file type. For those of you that have high end DLSRs and are shooting RAW files. You should think about keeping the images in another file format as well; perhaps Adobe DNG which will gradually become the industry standard for digital negative file format.

With the stunning photo's some of you are posting they are certainly worth keeping safe.

You share the same background as me Ralph. In my case, 40 years in IT industry. Having started with punch cards, paper tape and plug boards and progressed through drums, disks, floppies, cassettes, zip drives, tapes, memory cards, and no doubt half a dozen others I have left from the list, I appreciate how tenuous a storage medium can be, let alone storage formats! You are absolutely correct in advising care in protecting our precious images. I know it isn't a new problem. I recently unearthed some large format slides of my late father's, on Agfa film. They are very faded and will probably not last much longer. Fortunately, scanning them and learning to edit with something like Photoshop should help. I better get to it!

I'm not sure of the reason for the "mudflats" image being larger than expected. I followed the instructions on your site... resized my files (using a Nikon Editor), stored these in a Photobucket site, then pasted the URL address of each image. Sorry if the "mudflats" took too much room. I now realise I can edit a post, so I have reduced the size, with Photobucket functions, of the "mudflats" and "mitchell falls" images. The posts now have "smaller" images.

Tell you what, I am going to try and load a 1 Meg picture of my baby Paint horse Gunners Davinci Code in training doing a big stop... I will see if I am just patient long enough if it loads big... Maybe that is the secret???? Here goes:




No, even tried font size, Zoom level, loaded larger pixel in the blank box... Nuttin worked... I waited for the system to downsize the picture having loaded it as 1.2 Megs!!! And it still loaded it the same way.. SO HOW DID YOU DO DAT?

Hi Steve,
I'm not sure I can explain, when the "mudflats" image was loaded into your site, why it appeared larger than other images of a similar size.
I had used Nikon Editor to reduce the size of this and other images in a batch. The original "mudflats" image was 2,796Kb. When reduced it was 172Kb. I just checked the sizes of other reduced images and they range from 82Kb to 175Kb. These smaller files were loaded into Photobucket site, http://s1022.photobucket.com/home/OBdreamer

I have seen some great photo's on these site's But someone sent to me a file of 500 or more photo,s In a past post when I asked about where BT"s can go,,,???It might have been nik off I can't remember anyway a nice one click on thing,so whoever it was that sent it to me via mail or this site explain how you did it so the whole post does not have to go through individual posts for each photo. And MAN it is really worth posting your collection too I might add on a post and if people want to spend the time going through them they can but although beautifull picks sent in not so great taking over the whole post with individual posts and photo,s buy the one person,Do you Know what I mean. Just a comment nothing serious. 6 months from now I intend to try to put on some photo's of our trip but some will be all in fun meant to put a smile on all who see's some will be planned but we will have to wait and see.

Gotcha now..... We upload directly from the Forum... The "Upload picture" button up in the right hand corner when you push Reply....

That is why WE are limited to that size... You have to be just providing a Link to the Photobucket, so you are not limited to size.. I understand now. I thought we were missing something, but you are not actually uploading the picture on the Forum, you are adding a Link to somewhere else where you have the pictures loaded.. Gotcha now. No wonder I was frustrating myself trying to figure out how you loaded so big..

Now I have to explain this to "Cowboy" here I am walking with, "Yulgilbar Oaks Playboy" cuz he still don't get it...

PS Personally though I own a small Canon if I had to choose a DSLR I would currently choose Nikon (primarily due to ergonomics/menus).

Just my 2.2 cents worth (incl GST) about brands. I have a Canon but if I was buying again I would seriously look at Sony DSLRs. Look at Mick's (Nik'n'Off) photos on his Blog (http://www.flickr.com/photos/39003485@N00/) and you'll see how brilliant they are. Better than my Canon.

Thanks for the vote for Sony, they do make a very credible camera and are at the forfront in many ways, but having looked long and hard at whats on offer and reviewing the track records of the major contenders, in all honesty I'm still drawn towards the Nikon product.

I use Canon gear, so I'm not about to change now.

John, 20 yrs ago Nikon lead the way but in the last 10 yrs Canon has forged ahead and I'd say that Canon is still just in front by a nose.
Stats for 2009 sales of DSLR's:
Nikon 36%
Canon 41%
Sony 13%
and then there are the rest.

Nikon is an excellent camera as is Canon. It is a personal choice with the layout of buttons, dials and how the camera feels in your hands. As to which one is better, there're both better than the rest.

One point to remember, all camera bodys do much the same thing. It is the quality of the glass in the lens that dictates the quality of the final image. Yes, I relise that the cost of some lenses is off the scale, just buy the best you can afford. I'm sure you would be happy with either brand. It also depends how serious you are about your photography too.

Sony make great stereos........I bought one myself years ago. lol.
Just kidding there.

Thanks for your positive comment. I'm an enthusiastic amateur with ambitions to improve. Some of the earlier images I put in that bucket were taken during a cruise along the Kimberley Coast. I had only used 35mm film previously, (very occasionally!), and a friend encouraged me to take his Sony digital (an old F505). The experience was positive; the "mudflats" was published in Len Zell's "A Guide to the Kimberley Coast" and this all sparked an interest in photography. I subsequently got a Nikon D70 and now have a D200. (I got SLR simply because I wanted the flexibility of swapping lenses.) I'm sure if I had a Canon, my photos would be much better (!) but I'm used to the Nikon interface, so will probably stick with that brand. Thanks for the guidance about using a tripod. I have one now, but think the D200 plus lens might be a bit too heavy for it. Probably have to upgrade. (I guess it's the same as upgrading to a bigger Bushtracker isn't it?)
